“Coals
to Newcastle” was evident in this 4 ball Better Ball event.
First off was the Society Captain Norman Harvey partnered by Ken
Holland, Captain of the host club.
They returned a score of 40 points over this beautifully prepared
course. This score was not beaten all day. The winning Captains
generously declined to accept their cut glass prizes, though the
Society Captain assured the 90 odd Past Captains present that Ken
Holland would be recompensed.
The winners of the Captains Prize went to Fred Summers and Ken Jackson,
both from the home club with 39 points (on count back). Second were
Ken Arnold (Tapton Park) and John Guard (Chesterfield), third were
David Brown (Tapton Park and Max Sharpe (Matlock) all again with
39 points.
The
better back nine of those on 38 points were Graham Naylor (Alfreton)
and Mick Murtagh (Shirland) enabling them to take fourth.
Nearest the pin prizes were won by Norman Harvey (he kept the golf
balls), Derek Northin and Mick Murtagh.
Ken Arnold, Burton Captain, welcomed everyone prior to the Society
Captain presenting the prizes to the winners.
Norman Harvey in response remarked that Burton on Trent had hosted
a Captains Society event ever since its inception in 1966.
He thanked all who had made his day such a success:- Gary Stafford
(Professional), Gavin Robson (Head Green Keeper), Bill Bird and
his lady helpers in the halfway house and acting as starters notwithstanding
Fred Pitt with his computer sorting out the scores together with
the Committee and members of his home club.
The Club President Arthur Maddock wound up the proceedings congratulating
Norman on his Captains Day saying that he truly deserved the accolade
of Society Captain having held many offices at Burton and been a
true servant of the club.
