Eight
years since our last visit to Disley Golf Club we were delighted
to be invited back to this delightful venue for our Annual
Match.
Shirt
sleeves were the order of the day for the players as they
enjoyed this magnificent course and the match was as keenly
but socially played as ever.
After 9 matches had returned to the clubhouse the scores
were level at 4.5 to 4.5 and the competitors viewed the
last match in with trepidation from the clubhouse balcony.
It was difficult to ascertain the result of that match from
body language, but it transpired that the away team had
succeeded in winning it for the visitors.
Alan
Preston, Manchester Captain, warmly welcomed the Derbyshire
team. He thanked his partner Steve Kewley, Disley Captain
(Handicap 2) for affording the courtesy and wished him well
during his year of office.
Peter
Brabbing, the visiting Captain who apparently delivered
meat to Nat Lofthouse as a butcher’s boy in his youth,
in replying to the toast “The Derbyshire Society”
expressed his gratitude to the hosts and Disley Golf Club
for the use of their facilities.
The Derbyshire players then rose to toast “The Society
of Manchester and District Golf Captains”. The whole
ambience of the day had been excellent.
Special
thanks were afforded to the two match Secretaries for their
organisation and to Mike Rhodes for taking photographs on
the day.
The Derbyshire Society hoped to host the 2011 match at Renishaw
Park Golf Club when old friendships would be renewed.
