Ryston
Park Golf Club, near Downham Market, was the venue for
the Annual inter-county match against the Society of Norfolk
Golf Captains on Thursday 23rd April.
The members of the Derbyshire team were warmly greeted by
the host club Captain Paul Allen and the Society Secretary
Frank Myers on a bright and sunny day.
Frank incidentally is retiring this year as Secretary after
over 10 years in the post.
The course was deceptively long at 6,334 yards over the
two 9’s, and provided a stiff task for home players
as well as the visitors. After the first 4 matches were
completed Derbyshire held a 3 – 1 lead, and feeling
confident, however Norfolk rallied winning 3 and halving
1 of the remaining matches to win by the narrowest of margins
4-1/2 to 3-1/2.
After an excellent post match dinner The Norfolk Captain
Michael Hardingham was presented with the Sandringham Shield
by the Derbyshire Captain John Carr. This Shield was presented
to the Societies for Annual Competition by the Norfolk President
Andy Bullen, and was graciously received by all present.
Despite a round trip of some 300miles for several Derbyshire
players the journey was well worth it and the 2010 match
was eagerly awaited.
